Tile Roof Installation & Tile Roof Repair

Tile roof systems can be clay or concrete and have similar physical properties and installation methods. Clay and concrete tile roofing materials are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors. Concrete tiles are less expensive than clay tiles. Clay tile was first discovered in China and the Far East dating back to 2,500BC. From that time period it spread throughout Asia and Europe and the earliest signs of tile in the United States are from the first settlements on Roanoke Island, North Carolina and Jamestown, Virginia.

Tiles were first imported for roofing in America, but by 1650 they were being produced in the upper Hudson River Valley and several factories were in operation at the time of the American Revolution. Fire was the main reason for the growth of tile roofing in this country. Devastating urban fires in the 17th century prompted regulations that encouraged the use of tile as fireproof roofing. The use of tile roofing declined in the 19th century as new fire resistant materials became available. By the end of the 19th century tile roofs enjoyed a revival due to the popularity of the Italianate, Gothic and Romanesque styles. The development of architectural terra cotta as a significant building material, the mechanization of tile production and growth of the railroad aided the resurgence of tile. During the first few decades of the 20th century the revival styles drawn from the Mediterranean and the American Southwest gave tile its broadest use.
